is there a difference in the drop rate of ectos for normal and hard mode in the underworld?

no. Rare materials aren't effected.

* Skill Tomes
* Insight and Passage Scrolls
* Dyes
* Rare crafting materials
* All rare (gold) items
* All unique (green) items
* Special event items

Doesn't matter if you farm in NM or HM. For 5 min or 5 hours. Those drops don't change.

Drop rate of ectos is not affected at all.

However, if you are using the sin sliver armor build it will take twice as long in nm since monsters do not attack as quickly as they do in hm.

The reason of HM in UW is because of the double item at the end chest.
Besides when you do nm there are not a big difference in the level of the enemy then when you do HM.

yeah, it's the end chest with much more drops that matters. besides, u can speed clear it in HM ;-) why do it in NM =D?

Wrong, skill tomes don't drop in NM. And I am pretty sure that golds drop more in HM. That's the loot scaling list.

Skill tomes do drop in NM. Elite skill tomes (as well as normal) drop in HM.

I have found 2 reasons to farm UW in HM... The first is if you are doing a clear and you're after the end chest. The second is if you are using a 600/smite method where you need the increased damage to trigger [Spirit Bond].

Otherwise, ecto farming is usually more efficient in NM.

Per wiki:

Non-Elite Tome
Acquisition
A random drop from normal monsters in Hard Mode
Locked Chests in Hard Mode
Zaishen Chest

Back on topic: As stated by everyone else, NM/HM has no effect on ecto drop rate.
